Man City have placed Everton defender Mason Holgate top of their summer shopping list, Football Insider can reveal.
Manager Pep Guardiola is in the market for a centre-back with Premier League experience after the team’s defensive woes this season.
A Man City source has told Football Insider that they are keeping close tabs on Holgate and have already made him a firm target for the next transfer window.
The Premier League champions, who signed John Stones from Everton in 2016, have been hugely impressed by the 23-year-old’s form in recent months.
Holgate has established himself as a first choice under Carlo Ancelotti in the heart of the defence, usurping Michael Keane as Yerry Mina’s regular centre-back partner.
As revealed by Football Insider, Everton are keen to offer Holgate a new and improved deal to replace his current contract, which expires in the summer of 2022.
City’s interest will be a major concern to the Merseysiders after they had been confident of fending off the defender’s other suitors Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Sheffield United.
Holgate has the kind of versatility and pedigree that makes him an ideal fit for Guardiola.
Predominantly a centre-back, he can also play at right-back and he even slotted into the central midfield last month due to a series of injuries.
Everton previously valued the former England Under-21 international, who signed from Barnsley in the summer of 2015, at £14million but that has rocketed following his recent impressive form.
Holgate has now started 17 of his club’s last 18 Premier League matches on the trot and is even in contention for England’s Euro 2020 squad.
