Man United will find it hard to do a deal to make Newcastle's Eddie Howe their next manager, sources have told Football Insider.

The Red Devils' new sporting director Dan Ashworth worked with Howe at Newcastle and sources say it is "no surprise" that they are interested in the Englishman.

However, it is believed there is no love lost between the two clubs after a drawn-out compensation battle over Ashworth's move to Old Trafford.

Howe is tied down to a lucrative, long-term deal at St James' Park after extending his stay earlier this year.

That contract does not have a set release clause meaning Man United would have to again negotiate a compensation package with Newcastle.

Ten Hag is losing grip on his reign at Old Trafford after a shocking start to the 2024-25 campaign which sees them sit 14th in the Premier League table.

He has delivered the League Cup and FA Cup in his first two seasons at the club.

Meanwhile, Howe's side sit seventh in the table after picking up 12 points from their first seven games.

He led them to the Champions League in his first full season in charge at Newcastle but finished seventh in an injury-hit 2023-24 campaign.
