Danny Mills heaped praise on Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho for putting his foot down when it comes to attacker Harry Kane.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England international understood why Kane was frustrated over not playing against Bayern Munich but added Mourinho needed to protect him.
It was reported that the Spurs forward is frustrated over not facing Bayern Munich on Wednesday as it hurts his plan to win the Champions League Golden Boot.
Mills explained that Mauricio Pochettino likely would have caved under the pressure and played Kane, and admitted he was happy to see that Mourinho was standing firm.
When asked whether Kane is right to be frustrated, Mills told Football Insider: “At this stage of the season, they have to be protected from themselves.
“And this is where I think it’s different, under Pochettino I believe that he would have played and he would have put pressure on him to play.
“Mourinho is having none of it, he’s just going ‘no this is the right thing for you and the right thing for the team’.
“And as I said, you have to be protected from yourself, from wanting to always plays, the team has to be more important than the individual.
“Mourinho gets that and he’s powerful as well as strong enough to say ‘No, I’m the boss and I’m going to do what’s right for the team long-term.”
The 26-year-old England international has featured 20 times across all competitions for Spurs this season and has scored 15 goals in the process.
Kane’s quest to win the Champions League Golden Boot is going well this season as he has racked up six goals in his first five appearances in the tournament.
