Newcastle United are in talks to sign highly-rated Hamilton winger Lewis Smith, Football Insider understands.

Smith made his debut for Hamilton last season but has established himself as a regular this campaign, catching the eye of rival clubs while playing in the Scottish Premiership

A source at Newcastle United has told Football Insider that the Magpies are hoping to steal a march on their rivals for the attacker by setting up a deal for the player in next month’s transfer window.

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce gives a thumbs up to the crowd

The Magpies see Smith as a potential star in the making and they are ready to test Hamilton’s resolve to hang on to the young star when the transfer window reopens.

The skilful attacker has scored four goals and provided three assists in 21 games in all competitions for Hamilton so far this term.

The 19-year-old’s superb form saw him make his debut for Scotland’s under-21s earlier this year and he is tipped for a bright future in the game.

Hamilton have a proud history of developing young players, the likes of James McArthur and James McCarthy progressing through the youth ranks before moving to the English Premier League.

Smith looks like being the latest hot prospect to follow in their footsteps, his progress at Hamilton bringing him to the attention of a number of clubs in England with scouts flocking to watch the teenager in action this season.

In other Newcastle United news, Football Insider pundit says the Magpies “cannot afford” to lose one of their players for the bargain price being reported.
