Exclusive: Newcastle line up move to sign defender wanted by Leeds

By Harry Sykes

Newcastle United are lining up a move for Bristol City’s Joe Bryan after losing Paul Dummett to injury, Football Insider can reveal.

Magpies full-back Dummett faces several weeks out of action after suffering a hamstring injury in last weekend’s opening Premier League defeat to Tottenham.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez was already in the market for a new left-back before Dummett’s injury, but with his regular left-back now on the sidelines his need to bring in cover has increased.

Ciaran Clark was forced to revert from centre-back to left-back after Dummett’s injury and Benitez is short of options in his squad for the left-back role.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Newcastle scouts have been keeping tabs on Bryan for some time and they will have been impressed by how he has started the new Championship season.

Benitez’s side could now be ready to test Lansdown’s stance by firming up their interest in Bryan before the close of the transfer window.

Bryan is regarded as one of the best left-backs in the Championship after catching the eye at Bristol City.

The 23-year-old has come through the ranks at Bristol City has racked up nearly 200 first-team appearances since making his debut in 2012.

Bristol City have already rejected a bid from Birmingham City for Bryan this summer with Robins owner Steve Lansdown saying he would only sell Bryan to Premier League club.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month that Leeds wanted to sign Bryan, and were monitoring him closely.

The Championship club subsequently signed Cameron Borthwick-Jackson on a season-long loan from Manchester United.

In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are edging closer to a £25million signing as an imminent £45million switch triggers a transfer chain of events.
