Newcastle are prepared to let Callum Wilson leave upon the expiry of his contract after his latest injury blow, sources have told Football Insider.

Wilson, 32, has been ruled out for up to two months with a hamstring injury despite having made his first appearance of the season just last month.

With less than a year remaining on his current deal at St James' Park, Newcastle have been weighing up whether to extend his stay beyond the end of the season.

Now, sources say they are leaning towards a decision not to offer extended terms given his lack of availability and high wage packet.

Instead, the club have been backed to turn their attentions to the transfer market in the summer to find a reliable backup for Alexander Isak, who remains the first choice under Eddie Howe.

Callum Wilson unlikely to sign new Newcastle United contract

Howe confessed that he "feels so sad" for Wilson as his latest injury blow came so soon after his return to the first team, but Newcastle have now been given a decision to make.

The manager has long been a backer of the striker, having insisted he remain at the club despite interest in the summer, but is also aware his squad will need strengthening.

Since joining the Magpies in 2020, Wilson has missed a total of 102 games so far for club and country - a number just shy of his 112 appearances for the club.

His injury issues and lack of availability have long been a concern for Newcastle, and as a result, sources say they are unlikely to extend his contract.

This latest hamstring blow is also set to rule out the possibility of a move in the January transfer market despite early suggestions that the club could look to raise funds from his sale.
