Newcastle United are aiming to blow Celtic and Rangers out of the water to solve their left-back problems with the signing of Milad Mohammadi, Football Insider understands.
Magpies boss Rafa Benitez has made a new left-back one of his top priorities during this month’s transfer window and Mohammadi, who currently plies his trade in the Russian Premier League with Akhmat Grozny, is on their wanted list.
Paul Dummett, who is recognised left-back in the Newcastle first-team squad, is currently out injured, meaning Javi Manquillo has been forced to deputise in the left-back role at times this season and Benitez is keen to bolster his squad options for the second half of the season.
Mohammadi is currently away on international duty with Iran at the Asian Cup and Newcastle have sent scouts to watch the defender in action during the tournament in the United Arab Emirates.
The 25-year-old has impressed at the Asian Cup, helping Iran reach the quarter-finals without conceding a goal at the tournament so far.
Mohammadi has been on Celtic’s and Rangers’ radar after he caught the eye at the World Cup with Iran last year.
Mohammadi is out of contract at Akhmat Grozny this summer and Newcastle could try and land the defender for a cut-price fee before the close of this month’s transfer window.
