Nottingham Forest have made an approach to sign out-of-favour Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald, Football Insider understands.

Fulham have given the green light for midfielder McDonald leave the club before Thursday’s transfer deadline and a number of Championship clubs have shown an interest in the former Wolves man.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Forest have now expressed an interest in McDonald as new boss Martin O’Neill looks to reshape the squad he inherited from Aitor Karanka.

O’Neill is an admirer of McDonald and feels his experience of winning promotion last season from the Championship would make him a valuable addition to his squad at the City Ground.

McDonald has made only 11 appearances so far this season and last featured for Fulham in the 1-1 draw with Wolves on Boxing Day.

The 30-year-old has not made a start for Fulham since the arrival of Claudio Ranieri at the club in November and has played just eight minutes of football under the Italian.

Forest are now waiting to see if the Scotland international is interested in dropping down to the Championship and joining O’Neill’s side for the second half of the season.

In other Nottingham Forest transfer news, it can be revealed O’Neill is working on a last-gasp deal to recruit Stoke big name.
