Kevin Phillips has suggested that Newcastle United could sign Hull City winger Jarrod Bowen this month but that it would have to be a “big-money” deal.
The former Sunderland and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he thinks it is unlikely the Magpies will get their hands on the 23-year-old but says things could change late in the window.
It is reported that Newcastle have made a move over signing Bowen after his fantastic performances in the Championship but that the two clubs are currently some way apart in their valuations.
Phillips says that while he thinks the attacking star, who has 17 goals under his belt already this season, will remain with Grant McCann’s side, a big offer late in the window might be too much for Hull to turn down.
Phillips told Football Insider: “I don’t see that one happening unless it happens on the last day, big-money deal, of course could Hull afford to turn down a big offer?
“It’s been talked about so much since the beginning of the season. Definitely I see that happening in the summer but whether it happens now, I’m not sure.
“We’ve seen deals struck at the last minute for big money, it all depends on the kid and whether he’s desperate to leave or whether he wants to stay at Hull.
“When an ex-manager has worked with a player, know them well, knows their qualities and I’m sure it’s not going to be cheap but Steve knows the player inside out so that’s half the battle. You’re not taking a gamble. This kid looks like he’s got something a bit special.”
Bowen has been the standout performer at the KCOM Stadium over the last couple of years, with 22 goals in 46 appearances for the Tigers last season.
He was signed by Newcastle boss Steve Bruce during the manager’s time in charge at Hull, with a total of 129 games and 54 goals under his belt to date.
In other Newcastle United news, Darren Bent has urged a big-name talent to sign for the Magpies in a “no brainer” of a move.
