Noel Whelan claimed that Celtic should go all out to sign Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama as he knows what it is like to play for the Glasgow giants.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Leeds United attacker stated that Neil Lennon would know exactly what he was getting if he opted to sign the 28-year-old who is surplus to requirements at Spurs.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Kenyan international is open to the idea of returning to play for the Hoops if they can agree on a deal with Tottenham.

The midfield powerhouse played 91 times for the Bhoys between 2011 and 2013 before leaving to join Southampton, and Whelan suggested a reunion could work for all parties.

When asked whether Neil Lennon should go all out to sign Wanyama, Whelan told Football Insider: “Look I think if you’re going to strengthen and it’s a player who knows the club already like Victor Wanyama does, then yeah.

“Neil will know what he is getting, he is surplus to requirements at Tottenham, Tottenham will want to get him off the wage bill and out the football club if he is not needed, which it looks like he is not.

“So yeah it could be a good move for both teams. I feel he still has a lot of football still to give and he’ll be strong in that midfield area in the Scottish Premier League as it’s a tough old league, it may not be filled with quality but you’re going to get 100% commitment from every single player and it will be physical.

“I think Wanyama can handle those demands.”

Wanyama has only managed to feature three times for Mauricio Pochettino’s side across all competitions this season, with only 23 minutes of his playing time coming in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old Kenya international is contracted to stay with Spurs until 2021 and has made a grand total of 96 appearances since joining from the Saints in 2016.
