Noel Whelan claims that Tottenham have been dealt a “massive blow” after Danny Rose’s unexpected admission over his future.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds United striker says that the left-back’s comments clearly demonstrate an issue between the club and the player, suggesting that the Lilywhites want to get him off the wages in north London.
Rose revealed to the Evening Standard that he plans on remaining at Tottenham until the end of his contract in 2021 even though he’s been told by the club he won’t get a new deal.
Whelan says that it is quite clear there has been a breakdown in Rose’s relationship with the club and that Spurs would likely rather get him off the books than keep him over the next year and a half.
Whelan told Football Insider: “Danny Rose, the player has the power. If they want to sell him, he’s not going to go, that’s the issue, that’s going to be the debate and squabble between club and player between now and whenever it gets resolved.
“That’s if it gets resolved, I don’t think it will, the club don’t want him any more, they want to move him on, but the player’s not willing to go, he’s going to see out his contract and take his money.
“That’s a massive blow to Tottenham. They’re paying him a lot of money and to not be using a player, and not getting the best out of him because of the squabbles between player, club and manager, is it worth having these players around? It’s toxic.”
Rose, 29, has played 209 times for Spurs since moving to north London from Leeds, a number of injury problems curtailing his playing time for the Lilywhites.
This season has seen him make 11 appearances across all competitions, fighting it out with Ben Davies for a starting role under Mauricio Pochettino.
