Jackie McNamara claims that Aston Villa would be snapping up a relatively low-risk signing if they spend £15million on Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos in January.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Scotland international says that the excessive amounts of money spent in the Premier League means that the eight-figure fee would be relatively cheap in comparison.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Villans are eyeing up the Glasgow giants’ Colombian hero after his goal-scoring exploits north of the border, the Light Blues slapping a £15million-plus valuation on his head.
McNamara says that the money being demanded by Rangers is well within reach for any top-flight side in England and that the Villans will see him as a low-risk with potentially high rewards considering his form over the last couple of years.
McNamara told Football Insider: “It’s not a lot for the Premier League now, £15million, is it? Championship clubs pay that now which is crazy. They won’t see that as a massive gamble.
“So far this season he’s not been sent off yet like he was last year, not shown the same sort of petulance. Maybe he’s settled in a little bit that way.
“Strikers are quite difficult to get, especially for great prices.”
Morelos was a constant threat for Rangers last season, firing home 30 goals across all competitions, but he also picked up several bans for both sending offs and retrospective punishment, leading to many questioning his temperament.
He has not been booked once in the Scottish Premiership during the opening seven games of the campaign, while he has already struck 14 times for Steven Gerrard, five of which have come in the top-flight.
In other Aston Villa news, Noel Whelan claims that clubs will be queuing up to sign a senior Villa star for a bargain.
