Danny Mills has claimed Steven Gerrard could leave Rangers at the end of the season and raid the Ibrox giants for three defenders at his new club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Gerrard's former England teammate suggested the 40-year-old has told centre-back, Connor Goldson, right-back James Tavernier and left-back Borna Barisic not sign new deals until at least the summer.

Rangers currently sit 19 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership after their 1-0 win over Celtic last weekend.

“Say Steven Gerrard goes on to win the Premiership this season, does very, very well, you just wonder who is in the background sniffing around Steven Gerrard and where he might think about going next,” Mills told Football Insider.

“He might just say to the players ‘who knows? Just hold on, just wait until the end of the season and see what happens. If we win this, then obviously your stock at Rangers is massively high in terms of new contracts or if I’m going to leave and you’ve only got a year left, I might want to take you with me to my next club. So don’t sign that new deal.’

“There are all sorts of shenanigans that go on in football so people can get the best deals done. Everybody is always looking out for themselves, everybody’s always looking out for that next move and what’s coming next.

“Sometimes you just don’t know what’s going on in football.”
