Exclusive: Pundit suggests Spurs star struggling to cope with demands after recent sighting

Noel Whelan has questioned whether Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele can cope with the demands of the Premier League after his latest injury setback.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds United striker and broadcast pundit says he is not certain the 23-year-old has fully got to grips with the intensity of England’s top flight.

Ndombele, who has already missed a handful of games through fitness problems, limped off after just 25 minutes against Southampton following a knock which he was unable to shake off.

Whelan says that he is not sure whether the Lilywhites’ record signing is injury prone or not but does question if his body can cope with the cut and thrust of the Premier League.

“You’ve got to question it, is the demands of the Premier League too much for him so far, for this sort of player?” Whelan told Football Insider.

“We know it’s different to France, we know that, you’re in a league now where it’s the best league in the world, it’s the most physical, it’s the most challenging, it’s the most challenging in terms of every team has got good players now.

“There’s a fine margin between winning and losing in the Premier League, as we’ve seen. Training I’m sure is very intense, games come thick and fast at Christmas. Maybe he’s just learning that this is the Premier League and welcome to it.

“You’re going to have to get a lot fitter and a lot stronger if you’re going to survive.”

Ndombele broke the transfer record at Tottenham with his move from Olympique Lyonnais but has struggled to put a constant run of games together in the starting XI.

He has a total of 14 starts, 10 in the Premier League, from his 20 appearances for the Lilywhites.
