Noel Whelan tipped Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli to start in place of Christian Eriksen against Watford on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Coventry City and Leeds United attacker suggested that it was time Alli started getting back to his best as he has been struggling for a while.
Tottenham revealed via their official website that Eriksen may not be fit enough start the clash with the Hornets as he was being assessed after suffering a dead leg on international duty for Denmark.
Whelan admitted that Mauricio Pochettino had other options such as Lucas Moura to come into the team to replace Eriksen but admitted he thought the Spurs manager would go with the England international.
When asked who could replace Eriksen in Spurs’ starting line-up against Watford, Whelan told Football Insider: “Harry Winks is more of a defensive midfield player who can control the ball from the back, Dele Alli and Lucas Moura are your more likely replacements in that position.
“I think if I was going to go with one…Dele Alli, he really needs to start finding his form to get back to his best as we haven’t seen that for quite some time now.
“Depending on how he has been training, whether he has impressed, I think you would go with Dele Alli.
“Though you do also have Lucas Moura who on his day is capable of moments of brilliance, it’s just all about what he has seen in training.”
Alli has been rarely-used this season as he has played only 30 minutes of Premier League action and has been an unused substitute in Spurs’ last two league games.
The 23-year-old playmaker did see the start of his 2019/20 campaign disrupted as he was stuck on the sidelines for 20 days with a hamstring injury in August.
In other Tottenham news, Darren Bent has suggested that one senior player at Spurs could be sold for as little as £15million.
