West Ham are set to sign Manchester United star Jesse Lingard this week – and it would be a “brilliant” signing, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker heaped praise on the 28-year-old and claimed his “best football is still to come”.
Football Insider have reported the London club are in pole position to secure the attacking midfielder’s services after Sheffield United pulled out of the race.
The England international has not made a single Premier League appearance this season and would appear surplus to requirements at Old Trafford despite the club triggering a 12-month extension in his contract.
Whelan believes a move to the London Stadium would be ideal for Lingard ahead of next summer’s European Championship.
“I think Jesse would be an asset to anybody because he is a brilliant player,” he told Football Insider.
“He has excellent vision, he has been in the England set up and has been at Manchester United since he was a kid.
“He needs to get away from that club now though as there is too much competition in front of him. If he wants to get into the squad for the Euros, he needs to be playing football.
“He would relish joining a club like West Ham but it would be a big decision for him. If David Moyes can get hold of him, he will be getting a fantastic player.
“I think his best football is still to come but he needs to be playing regularly.”
