Rangers are in pole position to sign Oldham defender George Edmundson ahead of his multiple English suitors, Football Insider understands.

Edmundson , 21, is being chased by a number of clubs this summer after impressing for Oldham in League Two last season.

As revealed by Football Insider earlier this week, Rangers and Peterborough have made verbal offers for the highly rated centre-back with several other clubs also weighing up bids for him.

A Rangers source has told Football Insider that the Glasgow giants are clear favourites to win the race for Edmundson’s signature as has been impressed by manager Steven Gerrard’s vision for the future.

The 6ft 3in centre-back has been a mainstay for Oldham this season and was named in the League Two team of the year.

But the fourth-tier side are vulnerable to offers for the English rising star as he is out of contract in the summer of 2020.

Gerrard is looking to bring in a new central defender to bolster his squad options for next season and Edmundson has emerged as one of his top targets.

Joe Worrall will return to Nottingham Forest after completing his season-long loan, while veteran Gareth McAuley is set to leave when his contract expires next month.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that an English club want to sign Ibrox 25-year-old for a six-figure sum.
