Paul Robinson claimed that Newcastle United attacker Allan Saint-Maximin had been the best player for the Magpies in 2019 after his display against West Ham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Blackburn and Tottenham goalkeeper claimed that in his opinion Saint-Maximin had been Newcastle’s best player and highlighted his performance in the 3-2 win over the Hammers on Saturday.

The 22-year-old winger has played seven times for the Magpies since joining from French side Nice in the summer and is yet to score a goal or register an assist.

Robinson stated that he thought in some outings Saint-Maximin hadn’t played high enough up the pitch in order to provide Joelinton with enough support but noted that the Frenchman just seemed to click with the Brazilian forward and Miguel Almiron against West Ham.

When asked about Saint-Maximin’s display against West Ham, Robinson told Football Insider: “He’s been their best player for me this year, Saint-Maximin.

“I’ve spoken about him for the last couple of weeks, I like him, I like what he is doing, I don’t think he’s been playing high enough up the pitch as Joelinton has been isolated at times but Almiron, Saint-Maximin and Joelinton seem to have clicked this week.

“They seemed to work as a front three, they interacted, their movement was good, and Joelinton had bodies around him so he could find passes.

“With Almiron and Saint-Maximin being higher up the pitch, it caused West Ham a lot of problems and Newcastle looked a lot better this week, they looked like the team Steve Bruce has wanted them to be.”

Newcastle spent £16.5million on acquiring Saint-Maximin’s services from Nice in the summer and had him sign a six-year deal upon his arrival at St James Park.

In his last season at Nice, the right-sided winger scored six times, while registering five assists, in the 36 appearances he made across all competitions.

In other Newcastle United news, it can be REVEALED that the Magpies conducted a transfer mission during Leeds United’s 2-0 win over QPR.
