Exclusive: Saint-Maximin may be binned by Newcastle as mass clearout mooted by ex-pro

Noel Whelan insists that Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin cannot consider himself safe from being sold this summer if the proposed takeover takes place.

The former Leeds and Middlesbrough striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims that every member of the Magpies’ squad will be at risk of being offloaded among a major clearout under the prospective new owners.

The Chronicle report that current chief Mike Ashley has given Amanda Staveley and her consortium of investors exclusivity over a deal for the club and that all parties are waiting for confirmation from the Premier League.

As one of the standout performers for Newcastle this season, many fans would expect Saint-Maximin to play a key role in what could be a new-look squad next season.

However, Whelan says that even the 23-year-old is not guaranteed a place at St James’ Park, insisting every player will have to prove themselves to the new hierarchy on Tyneside.

Asked if Saint-Maximin would be someone the prospective owners could build a team around, Whelan told Football Insider: “He’s been great while he’s been there – he’s been exciting, he’s that Newcastle kind of player that they love, very quick, very direct on the ball, they love that at St James’ Park – but everybody will have to prove themselves.

“There will be a clearout of deadwood that’s there, they will want to build a new stronger squad if they’re going to challenge and be a really strong outfit to break into those top-six places.

“The players will be thinking: ‘Am I part of these plans?’ That’s the problem, sometimes when you get new owners in, there’s got to be a bit of a clearout.”

Saint-Maximin has played 21 times across all competitions since joining from OGC Nice last summer, with three goals and four assists under his belt.

He has been hampered by injuries throughout the campaign, primarily muscular issues.
