Sheffield United have tabled a £3million-plus formal bid for Reading midfielder John Swift as they aim to beat Leeds United to a summer deal, Football Insider can reveal.
The two Yorkshire giants are both keen on prising the 25-year-old from the Championship strugglers in the next window.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the Premier League outfit have made the first move for Swift.
They have submitted a bid that is believed to be between £3-5million.
Reading may be forced to cash in on Swift this summer amid growing financial problems.
As revealed by Football Insider, the asking price for the versatile midfielder was £7m last summer but it has dropped in the wake of the pandemic.
Sheffield United and Leeds have both targeted Swift on the back of another impressive for Reading, who he joined from Chelsea in the summer of 2016.
The central midfielder, who can also play in attacking midfield, has scored five goals and supplied 10 assists from 35 league appearances for a team who are 16th in the Championship.
Signifcantly, he has just entered the final two years of his contract at Reading, which runs until the summer of 2022.
Swift could now have a big decision to make on his future as the likelihood grows he will quit the Berkshire club.
