Sheffield Wednesday have opened talks with Tottenham over a permanent deal to sign midfielder Josh Onomah, Football Insider understands.

Onomah spent last season on loan at Wednesday, making 15 appearances during his stint at Hillsborough.

A Wednesday source has told Football Insider that boss Steve Bruce is a big fan of attacking midfielder Onomah having previously signed him in the summer of 2018 while he was in charge of Aston Villa.

Bruce is keen to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion to the Premier League next season and he has made Onomah one of his top targets this summer.

Discussions have begun between the Championship club and the Champions League finalists about a deal that would end home-grown Onomah's lengthy association with Spurs.

The 22-year-old, who made his Tottenham debut aged 17, has spent the last two seasons out on loan after finding himself down the pecking order in Mauricio Pochettino's side.

The England Under-21 international, who has made 32 appearances for Tottenham, is going to find it difficult to break into Pochettino's plans next season and Spurs could be tempted to cash-in on him.
