Kevin Phillips has claimed Jurgen Klopp will be encouraged to hear that Timo Werner only has eyes for Liverpool ahead of a potential summer move.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested he would prefer the Reds to sign Erling Haaland but admitted Werner, 24, would be a “very good” buy.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed that the Germany international will only leave RB Leipzig this summer for the Reds despite interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
Football Insider understands that the club are unwilling to match Werner‘s £53.7million release clause which can be triggered in June.
Instead, the Reds are considering offering a reduced fee spread across three payments as they react to worrying financial times and an unstable transfer market.
When asked by Football Insider if Klopp would be excited by Werner’s want to play at Anfield, Phillips said: “If they are chasing him that would be very encouraging to hear.
“It will be for quite a fair bit of money but he looks like a class player.
“Liverpool are at that point now where they have got to aim for the best and he is certainly one of those.
“If they cannot go and get a Haaland, who they should go for, whilst Werner is not in the same league he is a very good player if they could get him on board.
“It will be very encouraging for Jurgen Klopp to hear the player wants to go to the club and that club only.”
The striker has been in electric form this season, scoring 30 goals and providing 12 assists in 38 appearances across all competitions.
A hat-trick against Mainz today, in a 5-0 away victory, will have not gone unnoticed on Merseyside.
