Southampton winger Josh Sims is in advanced talks to join New York Red Bulls on loan, Football Insider understands.

Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls have lined up a surprise move for Sims on a year-long loan and Southampton are happy to sanction the loan move.

A source at St Mary's has told Football Insider that Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl feels he has enough cover in his squad to allow Sims to go out on loan to get regular first-team action over in the USA.

England Under-20 international Sims started last season on loan at Championship side Reading, but returned to Southampton in January after starting just five games with the Royals.

Sims broke into the Southampton side upon his return in January, making seven appearances in the Premier League as the club secured survival.

New York Red Bulls are currently third in the Eastern Conference as they look to reach the MLS Play-Offs and they feel Sims will be a valuable addition to their squad.
