Stoke City have agreed a £7m fee with Aberdeen for defender Scott McKenna in a major blow to Celtic, Football Insider understands.

Stoke saw their initial £5m offer turned down by Aberdeen, but they have now come back with an improved offer of £7m which Aberdeen have reluctantly accepted.

A source close to the club has told Football Insider that Aberdeen have now given McKenna permission to hold talks with Stoke over a potential move to the English Championship.

The 22-year-old is highly-regarded in Scotland after impressing for Aberdeen over the 18 months and he has broken into the national team set-up.

Stoke have already signed Danny Batth this month and McKenna could join him in a new-look Stoke defence.

The Scotland international has made huge strides over the past 12 months and has also attracted bids from Celtic and Aston Villa.

Losing out on the rising star will further antagonise Brendan Rodgers, who has been frustrated at the lack of spending from the Scottish champions.
