The attacker has been a bit-part figure at the Veltins-Arena since his arrival in January 2019.
In total, the £8million signing from Manchester City has scored two goals in 32 appearances for the club.
This season he has been limited to just three Bundesliga starts, having struggled with a knee problem for much of November and December.
Matondo rose up the ranks at Cardiff City’s academy before moving to Manchester City in July 2016.
His impressive performances for City’s youth sides earned him a call up to the senior Wales squad in November 2018, making his debut for Ryan Giggs’ side as a substitute against Albania.
Stoke are in the market for offensive reinforcements this month following a serious knee injury to star forward Tyrese Campbell before Christmas.
Campbell’s 16 Championship appearances prior to the injury yielded six goals and seven assists.
The Potters have struggled in the absence of the 21-year-old, winning just one of their last eight games in all competitions and scoring only four goals.
Stoke City manager Michael O’Neill recognises the need to add more attacking prowess to his squad while Campbell is sidelined and has identified Schalke winger Matondo as a potential solution.
