Exclusive: Stoke City working on deadline-day deal to sign West Brom midfielder

Stoke City are working on a deal to sign West Brom midfielder Chris Brunt before Friday’s transfer deadline, Football Insider understands.

The 35-year-old has found his first-team opportunities limited at the Hawthorns this season under Slaven Bilic, and he could be interested in a move away in search of regular action.

A Stoke source has told Football Insider that Potters boss Michael O’Neill is a huge fan of Brunt having worked with the experienced operatpr during his time as Northern Ireland manager.

The veteran’s versatility – insofar that he can play across the midfield as well as left-back – makes him an attractive option for O’Neill as he looks to bolster his squad at the bet365 Stadium in the last few hours of the transfer window.

The Potters are expected to be busy in the closing stages of deadline day as they look to reshape their squad, and Brunt would make a valuable addition to the dressing room as they look to secure survival.

The Northern Irish international has made just eight appearances for the Baggies so far this term, and has yet to start a game under the Bilic’s tenure.

The former Sheffield Wednesday man has made 418 appearances for Albion having over a 13 year period at the Hawthorns, but has severely fallen down the pecking order in the midlands.

O’Neill is willing to offer him an escape route from his current situation, however, with the boss said to be very keen on the 65-cap international.

In other Stoke City news, Cardiff City have opened talks to sign a Potters striker.
