Sunderland have slipped behind Blackpool in the race to sign Rotherham striker Jerry Yates this summer, Football Insider can reveal.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Blackpool now lead their League One rivals in pursuit of Yates, 23, following his impressive spell on loan at Swindon Town.
The striker is set to quit Rotherham this summer and bring to an end his lengthy association with the club.
He is a free agent from 1 July and has not agreed a new contract with the newly-promoted club.
The Yorkshire side went up from League One as champions last week after the clubs voted to curtail the season due to Covid-19.
But Yates is in line to be playing in England’s third tier again next season as the race for his signature hots up.
The Doncaster-born centre-forward has just completed the best season of his career after netting 14 times while on loan at Swindon.
He joined the fourth-tier outfit on loan last August and briefly returned to Rotherham in January before heading back to Swindon at the end of the winter window.
In 36 appearances in all competitions this season, Yates scored 14 goals and 13 of those came in league matches.
The forward has not matched those achievements at Rotherham, whom he joined in his teens.
In other Sunderland news, Football Insider can reveal the club have accepted a six-figure bid from a Premier League big gun.
