Gabriel Agbonlahor has tipped Tottenham rising star Joe Rodon to play a big role this season after his impressive full debut against Chelsea at the weekend.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former Aston Villa and England striker claimed the 23-year-old is perfectly suited to Jose Mourinho’s tactics.
Rodon put in an impressive performance at the heart of Mourinho’s defence on Sunday as the Lilywhites earned a creditable 0-0 draw that put them back on top of the Premier League table.
It was the Wales international’s first start for Mourinho’s side after his £11million move from Championship side Swansea City last month.
Before the visit to Stamford Bridge, he had been limited to just 10 minutes of top-flight action but Agbonlahor was left very impressed by how he has adapted.
He told Football Insider: “I thought he did very well against Chelsea.
“The sort of tactics that Jose Mourinho used suited him, he didn’t leave any space in behind, Spurs were very compact.
“He had a lot of help from Moussa Sissoko and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg either side helping him and they went to a six at the back at times.
“It was a comfortable game for him, he didn’t get tested a lot.
“I’m sure he’ll enjoy Jose Mourinho’s tactics because his defenders are very protected by the midfielders.
“It was a promising debut and I’m sure he’ll continue to get more games.”
Rodon played 54 times for Swansea before his move to north London and played a key role as they reached the Championship play-offs last term.
He made his debut for Wales in September last year alongside future Spurs teammates Gareth Bale and Ben Davies.
