Noel Whelan has suggested that Alfredo Morelos is being left out of the Rangers side so he doesn’t pick up an injury that could scupper a potential move.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, Whelan delivered his verdict as Morelos failed to appear for Steven Gerrard’s side for the second consecutive game.
The Colombian international returned to the bench on Saturday but didn’t play as the Light Blues beat Hamilton Academical 2-0.
Morelos, 24, saw a transfer to Lille fall through earlier in the summer but this site revealed that AC Milan have made contact about a possible move.
Asked by Football Insider whether Morelos’ lack of game time could harm the fee Rangers can demand for him, Whelan said: “The fee is not going to change because you know what you’re going to get with the player.
“He’s a goalscorer and a very good player but it’s the attitude you’ve got to look at.
“We don’t know whether he’s being left out because of his attitude or whether there was a deal ongoing.
“Another side you need to look at is you need to protect a player from getting injured.
“If he goes and plays and breaks his leg you’re not going to get anything for him.
“So you’ve got to be very careful with how you manage these players.
“We don’t know what’s going on in the background, who they’re talking to, if there’s interest, if there’s a bid, if they’re trying to negotiate or it’s just the fact they’ve got Kemar Roofe there who has taken the opportunity.
“It doesn’t matter who you are if somebody takes the opportunity and scores a goal, nine times out of 10, they’re going to get that position the following match and you’re going to have to wait your turn to return.”
