Noel Whelan insists it is “very worrying” how reliant Everton are upon Richarlison after they lost their third successive game in the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds United striker suggested that Dominic Calvert-Lewin and James Rodriguez are not the same when the 23-year-old is absent.
Richarlison served the final match of his three-game suspension as the Toffees lost 3-1 at home to Manchester United – Carlo Ancelotti’s side now winless in four.
Everton have failed to a Premier League game in which the Brazilian has been absent since his arrival from Watford in July 2018 – drawn four, lost four.
After Saturday’s loss, Carlo Ancelotti claimed that there is “no player in the world like Richarlison”.
When asked by Football Insider how worried Evertonians should be about the aforementioned stat and Ancelotti’s comments, Whelan said: “It is very worrying.
“Richarlison is so important to that side and when become reliant on one player it is a big concern.
“The Newcastle result was a shocking defeat. They should have been getting a point at least out of that game but they lose that and then get beat by United as well.
“Richarlison has pace, power, intelligence on the ball and he is aggressive as well.
“He is the player that brings the jigsaw together at Everton. Without him you do not get the best out of Dominic Calvert-Lewin or James Rodriguez.”
