Exclusive: Tottenham plot PL 24-yr-old raid to replace Ndombele, Bent: 'Spurs are serious?'

Darren Bent admits he has serious doubts over whether Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could fill the boots of Tanguy Ndombele at Tottenham this summer.

The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has blasted the Lilywhites’ plans to snap up the Denmark international from St Mary’s.

Football Insider revealed earlier this year that the Saints’ 24-year-old is top of the Lilywhites’ midfield targets after expressing firm interest in his signing back in January.

The Times report that current Spurs star Ndombele is growing ever more likely to leave the club this summer and that Hojbjerg could take his place.

However, Bent is not convinced the Southampton captain is the right answer for Mourinho, suggesting other players both at Tottenham and elsewhere will feel the same.

Bent told Football Insider: “Listen, Hojbjerg’s a very good player and he’s had a fantastic season at Southampton but you look at someone like him and go: ‘Is he going to make them better?’

“This is a team that’s got to be competing for Champions Leagues and trophies. If they get Hojbjerg and maybe lose Dembele, does he make them that much better? Will he be a player other players look at and go: ‘I want to go and play with him?’ I’m not quite sure.

“When you look at Spurs, and I’m not disrespecting Hojbjerg one bit, he’s had a very, very good season, look at where Spurs have come from in the last eight years or whatever, you talk about Mousa Dembele, Scott Parker, Luka Modric, Wanyama – they’ve had so many very good midfielder players.

“All of sudden you think: ‘Hold on a second here, yes Hojbjerg’s a very good player but will he make them better where people go Spurs are really serious?’ I’m not so sure.”

Hojbjerg has been a mainstay for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this season, missing just two of the club’s 35 games across all competitions.

He joined the Saints from Bayern Munich back in 2016 and has played 129 times for the Saints so far.

In other Tottenham news, Paul Robinson claims the Lilywhites have told a big-name star to find a new club.
