Kevin Phillips has tipped Serge Aurier to leave Tottenham this summer if AC Milan offer the full-back a route out of North London.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, expects the arrival of Matt Doherty, 28, to spark the Ivory Coast international to consider his future at Spurs.
Sky Sports claim AC Milan have held talks with Spurs over the potential signing of Aurier but the two clubs are said to be apart in their valuation for the 27-year-old.
He was a mainstay in Jose Mourinho’s side last season and made 42 appearances across all competitions.
When asked by Football Insider if he expected the former Paris Saint-Germain defender to leave this summer, Phillips said: “It is down to the player whether he wants to move.
“If Milan come in for him, given that Spurs have just signed another full-back in Matt Doherty who played virtually every game last season, I would want to move. It will be interesting to see what happens there.
“A great move for Doherty but I do not really see him improving that right-back position. The size of Tottenham, with no disrespect to Doherty, but I thought they may have gone for a more high-profile player. He is a good solid full-back but I am not sure that he is that much of an improvement on Aurier.”
Doherty made an astonishing 50 appearances in all competitions in the 2019-20 campaign for Wolves.
He became the club’s third major summer signing following the arrivals of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart.
