Noel Whelan has been left drooling over Wigan Athletic full-back Antonee Robinson after West Brom were named as front-runners for his signing.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker and Championship expert admits he has been dazzled by the left-back when he has watched him in action.
The Express and Star claims that the Baggies are among the clubs leading the chase for the 22-year-old if they win promotion back to the Premier League this season.
The defender saw a high-profile move to Italian giants AC Milan collapse in January due to a heart problem detected in his medical.
Whelan believes there will be plenty of clubs in pursuit of Robinson this summer and admits he would hate to come up against the USA international as a player.
Whelan told Football Insider: “He’s at the right age, he’s taken interest from one of the giants in Italy, hasn’t he?
“I’ve watched him play many times last season and this season, fantastic competitor, got pace, very good defender, great awareness, good in one-on-ones, loves to get forward as well and he looks like he’s got that aggression that you want.
“He is one player that I’m sure that not just AC Milan and not just West Brom will be looking at because he’s got so much talent. He’s one of these players you’d hate to come up against because he ticks every single box.
“He’s good in the air, he’s got loads of pace – wingers these days have the pace but he matches them.”
Robinson, who has seven caps for the USA under his belt, has played 30 times across all competitions for Wigan this season.
However, he has not played since January after undergoing treatment for the heart problem discovered during his medical in Italy.
In other West Brom news, Whelan claims that the Baggies are on the brink of signing a £25million-rated player.
