Whelan says that Leeds fans have proven time and again they are among the best supporters in the country but still says it was amazing to see how many made the journey for an under-18s match.
Whelan told Football Insider: “They’ve never, ever let the club down, have the fans, whether that be under-23 matches, under-18 matches or first-team matches.
“If you give the tickets, we’s sell them, we’ll take them to show the commitment we have to the football club and it really is quite remarkable. We’re very, very lucky to have these sort of fans.

“They travel to under-18s games in their thousands, to go and watch a youth match, it shows the commitment to the club. It’s great for the under-18s to feel the love from the fans, to get that kind of atmosphere.
“They’re the best in the country. Give them 20,000 tickets away from home, they’ll take all 20,000.”
With Elland Road holding just over 37,000 fans, the home support have averaged 35,198-a-game this season, over 7,000 more than second-ranked Nottingham Forest.
If Leeds were in their Premier League, their average attendance would place then 11th, just behind Everton who can fit 39,000 in at Goodison Park.
