Noel Whelan boldly claimed that Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips would be the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League if he was playing in the top-flight.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the ex-Leeds attacker raved about Phillips’ ability following the 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday by claiming he was the best defensive midfielder in the Championship.

Phillips was linked to a move to the Premier League in the summer as Aston Villa and Burnley were both believed to have had bids rejected for the 23-year-old.

Manchester United were also recently reported to be scouting the holding midfielder with them already planning ahead for next season.

The midfielder opted to stay at Elland Road instead of jumping to the top-flight as he committed himself to the Whites in September by signing a new long-term deal which keeps him at the club until 2024.

Whelan suggested that if Phillips had stepped up to the Premier League this season he wouldn’t have been out of his depth as he insisted that when you consider the specific role he plays, he would be the best player of his kind in England’s top-flight.

“He is the best defensive midfielder in the Championship and probably you know in the Premier League, if you think about that specific role,” Whelan told Football Insider.

The 23-year-old has been at Leeds for his entire career and has made 157 appearances for the club, with 144 of those outings coming in the Championship.

In his 2019/20 campaign so far, Phillips has been in fine form as he has registered one goal as well as gotten one assist across his 16 outings.

In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan claims that it is a “massive controversy” as the club’s rivals reportedly circle for one of their top players.
