Noel Whelan has claimed Barry Douglas can ignite his flagging Leeds United career just like Moussa Sissoko did at Tottenham.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker pointed out how it’s not too late for the 30-year-old defender to turn things around at Elland.
Douglas has started just three of Leeds’ 10 Championship matches this season and was an unused substitute once again in last night’s 1-0 win over West Brom.
The left-back has struggled to live up to his billing since being hailed as an outstanding signing when he was recruited from Wolves for £3million in the summer of 2018.
“Barry Douglas is running out of time at Leeds but it’s not too late,” Whelan told Football Insider. “It’s been stop-start for him and for somebody of his quality to be on the bench is disappointing.
“Douglas still has plenty to offer to Leeds and he can be their Sissoko. Look how he has been transformed at Tottenham. He was on the fringes for two seasons and then he turned things around with probably the best season of his career.
“He showed why Tottenham spent £30million on him and now he’s got a new four-year contract that keeps him there until he’s 34.
“We know Douglas is a great full-back, we saw that Wolves. It’s up to him to win back his place and make it impossible to leave him out.”
Douglas has played 32 matches since signing from Wolves and featured for the Under-23s earlier this week.
