Exclusive: Whelan claims West Brom star taking a risk after senior figure reveal
Noel Whelan has warned West Brom full-back Nathan Ferguson he is taking a risk not signing a new contract as he prepares for knee surgery.
The former Leeds United and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that a serious injury setback could impact the 19-year-old’s hopes of sealing a transfer this summer.
The Baggies’ technical director Luke Dowling has revealed that the promising full-back has turned down contract offers from the club and now faces exploratory operation on the knee problem which scuppered his move to Crystal Palace.
With a deal that runs out this summer, Whelan says that Ferguson could find himself struggling to attract suitors if he cannot prove his fitness in a medical.
Asked if the surgery could hinder his hopes of moving, Whelan told Football Insider: “It could do, any injury to a player with such a short amount of time left on your contract it’s a risk on both parties.
“As a player, you’ve got to hope it’s nothing serious, it’s something easy to fix, it’s not a cruciate, it’s nothing like that. I’m sure it’s something where clubs will not be too fussed whether they’re going to sign the player but you’ve got to make sure he passes your medical.

“There’s always that worry.”
Ferguson has emerged as one of the brightest young talents at West Brom this season, with 21 appearances under his belt for Slaven Bilic.
However, he has featured just twice in the last seven Championship fixtures for the Baggies.
In other West Brom news, Danny Mills has warned one Baggies star about a prospective transfer away from the club.
