Noel Whelan has ripped into Shane Duffy’s “shambolic” defending after Celtic were thrashed by Sparta Prague on Thursday.
The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has insisted that the 28-year-old is culpable for the Hoops’ shocking record at the back in recent weeks.
The Hoops slumped to a 4-1 defeat at Parkhead against their Czech counterparts and have managed to keep just one clean sheet in their last six matches.
Duffy has been a mainstay for the Bhoys since joining on loan from Brighton over the summer.
However, Whelan has blasted the Republic of Ireland international and insisted the defensive colossus has to find his own way out of him slump.
Asked what Lennon could do to help Duffy overcome his poor form, Whelan told Football Insider: “Well, that’s the problem, I think sometimes the player has got to overcome something like that, you know.
“The manager can’t really do too much, if he keeps playing him, he keeps putting his faith in him, you’ve got to repay that back. If you’re going through a hard time you’ve got to be man enough to come through it.
“At the minute their fragility is at set-pieces and crosses from wide areas, and you know that’s been one of his biggest strengths throughout his career.
“Something has to change because they’re not marking, they’re not defending properly, it’s letting everybody down.
“The thing is there’s not too many other choices you can choose from. They’ve got to get it right, they’ve got to change some way, get their game back on track as a unit.
“At the minute they look shambles. Absolutely shambolic at the minute, and that is crucifying them.”
