Liverpool recruitment chief Michael Edwards has been hailed as the “best in the business” for his “outstanding” work behind the scenes.

That is according to ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Anfield sporting director.

Edwards was the driving force behind a trio of “sensational” deals last week as Liverpool tied up new contracts for Jurgen Klopp and James Milner as well as reaching agreement to sign Salzburg attacker Takumi Minamino in January.

As reported by Football Insider, Liverpool are also working on tying midfield kingpin Georginio Wijnaldum to a lucrative new contract.

“You have to say Michael Edwards is the best in the business,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Liverpool’s recruitment has been outstanding in recent years, whether they’re paying big money for Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, a relatively small fee for Andy Robertson or a free like Adrian.

“Then you look at Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Firmino and Fabinho, who did not cost the earth, but who have all become world class under Klopp.

“I can’t remember a bad deal in years. Which is amazing and rare.

“Liverpool also kept the the new contracts for Klopp and Milner, and the Minamino deal, all quiet, which takes some doing. They’re sensational deals.

“Recruitment is absolutely essential for any club, and Liverpool have become the best at it.

“You look at Man United’s recruitment, it is absolutely shocking how much money they’ve spent in recent years and what they’ve got for it.

“For any club, it’s all about spending money on the best talent in the right areas on players with the right character and attitude.

“Liverpool have got a system that is fine tuned and works superbly.”

In other Liverpool news, it can be REVEALED that the club are working on another major deal after blizzard of agreements.
