Exclusive: Noel Whelan makes Augustin fitness claim for rest of Leeds season
Noel Whelan claims Leeds United will not see the best of Jean-Kevin Augustin between now and the end of the season after his injury layoff.
The former Leeds striker and boyhood fan of the club, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he doubts how much the 22-year-old will actually play for Marcelo Bielsa when he does return to fitness.
The French hitman has missed the last three games as a result of a hamstring injury, having played just 48 minutes since his loan from RB Leipzig.
Whelan, who is expecting the loanee to return in a week or two, does not believe he will offer Leeds a lot in their push for promotion, highlighting how behind the rest of the squad he is in terms of fitness.
Whelan told Football Insider: “You’ve got Augustin who’s a week, maybe two away with a hamstring injury.
“He’s never been fit since he came to Leeds so it doesn’t surprise me that he’s injured – I said it all along, if you push him too hard.

“He was the wrong signing at the time, he really was. He wasn’t going to contribute too much to us because the other players have gone through eight to ten weeks of pre-season.
“What will we see of him? He’ll have to start again because his match fitness is going to go back down again now he’s been injured for two or three weeks.
“We’re not going to see the best of him and I very much doubt he’s going to contribute that much, quite honestly.”
