Noel Whelan has told Football Insider Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle are good enough to spearhead West Brom to automatic promotion.
The Baggies are fourth in the Championship table with seven matches of the campaign remaining and are on a winning streak after three consecutive victories over Birmingham City, Brentford and Swansea City.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, our brilliant new columnist Whelan is convinced West Brom have the firepower to close the gap on the top two over the final five weeks of the league campaign.
“I wouldn’t rule them out of automatic promotion,” Whelan said. “They are six points behind Leeds, which is just two wins. West Brom’s next two games are away, but they can win any match with their strikeforce. It’s that good.
“West Brom have a much stronger attack than Leeds and Sheffield United. [Jay] Rodriguez and [Dwight] Gayle are a real handful, and they are good enough to help get them into the top two.”
Rodriguez has started all 39 of West Brom’s league matches, scoring 19 goals to put him seventh in the division’s top scorers list.
Gayle has also netted 17 times in the league, from 27 starts and five substitute appearances, during an impressive campaign on loan from Premier League outfit Newcastle United.
West Brom have 70 points going into their trip to Millwall on Saturday, while Sheffield United have 74, Leeds have 76 and Norwich City are flying high with a haul of 81 points.
In other West Brom news, it can be REVEALED the Baggies are to offload a senior player for good – and Leeds want to sign him ahead of the summer window.
