Wolves defender Ryan Bennett has rejected a last-gasp offer to join Sheffield Wednesday, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
Bennett is available for £3million this window after slipping down the pecking order under manager Nuno Espirito Santo at Molineux.
A Wolves source has told Football Insider that the centre-back, who turned 30 in March, has nonetheless rejected a move to Hillsborough.
Wednesday have been keen to take advantage of Bennett’s availability and sign him on a season-long loan.
But the player has knocked it back and is set to remain at Wolves despite playing no part in their first-team matches this season.
Bennett has failed to make the matchday squad for any of the club’s five fixtures, and dropped down to play as an over-age player for the Under-21s in the EFL Trophy.
That is a clear signal his days are numbered at Wolves, where he is out of contract next summer.
Norwich City have also explored a move in this window to re-sign a player who spent five illustrious years at their club.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Leicester City but they decided not to take up their £5m option to sign him permanently.
Bennett played in Leicester’s last five matches of the season, three of which were in the starting XI and twice came on at half-time.
He joined Wolves on a free from Norwich in 2017, won the Championship in 2018, but has not played regularly in the Premier League.
The former Peterborough trainee has made 92 appearances for Wolves after accumulating 119 games during his time at Carrow Road that began in 2012.
