Tottenham are going to need a major summer overhaul if they are to match their magnificent new stadium with similar excellence on the pitch, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds United and Coventry City striker is expecting the north Londoners will be very active in the forthcoming transfer and predicts a quartet of star recruits.
Tottenham have not signed any players in the last two windows and could lose Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen among a possible summer exodus after contract wrangles.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Whelan urged Spurs chiefs to provide Mauricio Pochettino with the funds to improve the side and make eyecatching signings like Juventus’ Paulo Dybala.
“Spurs have reached a crossroads and need a change of direction,” Whelan said. “The current team has peaked and that is because they have not strengthened in two years.
“Mauricio Pochettino will push hard for the changes he didn’t get last summer and I’m expecting four top quality signings, especially if Alderweireld and Eriksen leave.
“It depends on how much money is available to fund a recruitment drive, but there’s no point having a beautiful stadium if you haven’t got good enough players to play in it.
“It’s time for Spurs to win things and go to the next level. To do that they need to be ambitious and try and sign players like Dybala, who is young and exciting, and would be brilliant in the Premier League.”
Tottenham are third in the Premier League after marking the first game in their new stadium with a 2-0 midweek win against Crystal Palace.
They are without a fixture this weekend due to the FA Cup semi-finals and are next in action when they host Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals next Tuesday.
