Expert backs Tottenham to complete '£5m' transfer as deal agreed - 'Phillips is definitely a target'

Blackburn Rovers star Ashley Phillips could still join Tottenham in the near future despite signing a new contract.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

On Sunday (8 May) The Sun’s Alan Nixon reported that Tottenham are now favourites to sign the defender.

The 17-year-old signed his first professional contract on Tuesday (20 September), agreeing terms until the summer of 2025.

He has made six total appearances for Rovers this season but has not featured in the league since 27 August’s 1-0 loss to Stoke City.

Despite this new deal, Wenham claims Phillips could still join Spurs in the near future.

“It’s interesting. That could be, and I don’t want to upset Blackburn fans too much, it could be a way of him and his family rewarding Blackburn for bringing him through the academy,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Yes, he has signed a professional deal now. But that might come with the promise that he can go in the summer if a bid of £5million, or whatever it might be, comes in.

“That is an interesting one to look out for, certainly. He is definitely a Tottenham target.”

Phillips has earned rave reviews from former Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray.

On 10 November, speaking to Lancs Live, the Rovers boss hailed Phillips as “phenomenal” and admitted “the kid has every attribute” you would want in a top defender.
