Expert can't believe Newcastle United could sign Moise Kean amid £30m reveal

Noel Whelan has claimed Newcastle United should steer clear of a move for on-loan Everton forward Moise Kean.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Magpies should look elsewhere for a striker signing in January if they want to challenge for a Champions League berth this season.

According to Italian outlet Juve Dipendenza (21 November), Newcastle are interested in handing Kean, 22, another chance in the Premier League.

The Magpies would have to strike a deal with Juventus, who have a reported obligation to make the striker’s loan permanent at the end of the current season for £24million, on top of a £6million loan fee that has already been paid to Everton.

Kean scored just two Premier League goals in 29 appearances during his ill-fated one-year spell at Goodison Park.

The Italy international has displayed better form during spells on the continent with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “No disrespect to Kean. He came to the Premier League with Everton and found it very difficult.

“He didn’t set the world alight and, in the end, there were more negatives than positives in his performances.

“Looking back at that season, I’d say it was too much for him.

“Whether he struggled with the style of play at Everton, I don’t know. They had much better attacking players back then.

“I don’t think Kean would improve Newcastle’s squad too much.

“If they’re looking for someone to come in and try and keep them around those Champions League spots, I think they’ve got to look for a better option than Moise Kean.”
