Expert: Dean Henderson has 'blown it' at Man United after new development

Dean Henderson may have blown his chance at becoming the Man United number one after his incendiary comments this summer.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Henderson’s chances of usurping David de Gea next season.

Henderson, who joined Nottingham Forest on loan earlier this summer, launched a scathing attack on his parent club in an interview with The Athletic (2 August).

The 25-year-old claims he was told he would be Man United’s number one ahead of the 2021-22 season, in which he only made three appearances and revealed he turned down loan offers this summer and feels that he has wasted a year of his career, something he described as “criminal”.

As per Manchester Evening News (12 September), Man United are set to trigger a one-year contract extension included in David de Gea’s contract after he entered the final 12 months of his current deal in the summer.

Kenny claims Henderson could yet save his Man United career but he wouldn’t be surprised if the club look elsewhere when trying to replace De Gea.

“Has he burned his bridges there? He could be perfect if De Gea does go at the end of the season,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Henderson is a good keeper but he was very strong in what he said about the club and their treatment of him.

“He has done very well at Forest and if he continues to do well there they might not care what he has said in the past.

“If he saves them from buying a new goalkeeper then, it’s all swings and roundabouts. We will have to see what happens there.”

Henderson has made 29 total appearances for Man United.

He has played every minute of Forest’s Premier League season.
