Speaking to TCL (12 September), Foden admitted he used to love watching ex-Man United stars David Beckham and Wayne Rooney play for England when he was younger.

The 22-year-old also named David Silva as his favourite Man City player growing up.

Foden has impressed in the opening stages of the 2022-23 campaign and has been included in the England squad to face Italy and Germany during the international break later this month.

When asked by Football Insider if comparisons could be drawn between Foden and Rooney, Campbell said: “They have a similar appetite for the game.

“I am lucky enough to have known both from a young age.

“I have known Foden since he was seven years old. My son was at City with Foden. I have watched him grow up develop.

“Technically, Foden and Rooney are so gifted it is incredible.

“The difference is, Wayne had power as a 14-year-old. The way he played the game was unlike anyone else. He was a youngster at Everton but he had man strength.

“Two very gifted players. I would not like to compare Phil to Wayne though. There is no comparison.”
