Expert shares Callum Wilson 'worry' after Newcastle United update

Newcastle United must be careful with the fitness of Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson amid an update on their injury.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ double boost.

Trippier, 31, and Wilson, 30, made their return from injury in Sunday’s (8 May) 5-0 loss to Man City.

This was the first time Wilson had kicked a ball in a competitive game since December.

Trippier hasn’t played since 17 February’s win over Aston Villa, in which he scored the winning goal.

Both players are hugely important to Newcastle and McAvennie claims Eddie Howe should not be rising their fitness.

“Newcastle are in a position where they don’t need to win every game,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“With all due respect, their season is over. So I just hope Trippier and Wilson aren’t rushed back, there is no point in doing that.

“Wilson, I worry for him. He has had his problems since he joined and I’m sure Newcastle will be wanting him to participate in more than 20 games next season.

“Howe will want Trippier playing every minute next season too. How realistic that is, I don’t know.

“So don’t rush them back if you don’t need to. It is brilliant that they are back but let’s make sure they are ready for next season.”

Trippier joined Newcastle in January and has already become a fan favourite at St James’ Park.

Wilson joined the Magpies in the summer of 2022, scoring 18 goals in 44 appearances so far.
