Alan Hutton has suggested Albian Ajeti may have been better off staying at Celtic and not playing instead of being unhappy at another club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers right-back said there weren't enough clubs "willing to take the risk" on the 25-year-old.

On Wednesday (31 August), the Hoops confirmed Ajeti has joined SK Sturm Graz on a season-long loan.

According to FootballScotland (31 August), the deal includes an option to buy said to be worth around £2.1million.

The striker has two years remaining on his Parkhead contract after joining from West Ham in 2020 for around £5million.

On 30 August, journalist Anthony Joseph revealed that the Switzerland international was unimpressed by the transfer offers that had been made for him.

Hutton suggested Ajeti may have been better off biding his time at Celtic instead of settling for a move.

"Sometimes you might as well be more safe to just stick where you are," he told Football Insider.

"It’s hard as a player, do you want to go somewhere else where you’re not necessarily happy and it doesn’t work out?

"We all knew he wasn’t going to play the amount of minutes that he wanted [at Celtic]. It’s quite obvious there were a lot of people ahead of him at this moment in time. You look at [Giorgios] Giakoumakis who isn’t even a main starter and he was behind him.

"It’s not ideal because you know you’re not going to play. I feel for him because he had enough time to make the move happen but there weren’t enough clubs willing to take the risk on him."
