Expert who 'knows Ashworth well' makes 'phenomenal' Newcastle claim
Brighton chief Dan Ashworth would bring “phenomenal experience” to Newcastle United amid reported talks over the director of football post, according to Alex McLeish.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager revealed he knows the 50-year-old “pretty well” after his time in the game.
As reported by the Athletic on Tuesday (4 January), Ashworth has held talks with Newcastle over a senior position but a decision is not imminent.
The Magpies have reportedly targeted the Brighton figure to take charge as their director of football.
However, the Athletic claim he is not the only candidate in the running for the post.
McLeish insisted Ashworth is a “great name in the game”.

He heralded the senior figure’s “fantastic” work at Brighton.
McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Dan has moved around through the years. I know him pretty well.
“He’s got a great name in the game. The project at Brighton has been nothing short of fantastic.
“It’s not only Dan, there’s a lot of people involved. The chairman’s been very ambitious there.
“Also, Dan’s been headhunted a few times. I don’t think anybody in the game will say that’s a daft move. Dan Ashworth has phenomenal experience.”
Ashworth joined Brighton in 2019 after six years with the English FA.
He worked as the FA’s director of elite development.
Having hung up his boots, Ashworth worked his way to become Peterborough’s academy director in 2000.
He has also spent time in senior roles at Cambridge United and West Brom.
